This holiday season experience the beauty of Sedona’s landscape like never before with Sedona Northern Lights, the country’s largest light show on a natural canvas. From December 13-16, this free, family-friendly event will celebrate the magic and joy of the holidays while honoring Sedona’s remarkable natural environment and raising awareness of our pristine dark skies. Sedona Northern Lights is the city’s most sustainable event, with the least amount of impact on the environment.

At the top of each hour from 6-9pm, a holiday-themed 3D art show will be projected onto the vast surface of Camelhead Rock. The show will be visible from locations throughout Uptown Sedona and Gallery Row, offering a great opportunity for locals to browse the city’s vibrant selection of boutiques, galleries, and restaurants in between show times without crowds of visitors. The festive atmosphere will be enhanced by holiday music played at viewing areas via KAZM 780AM.

Sedona Northern Lights is presented by the Sedona Chamber of Commerce & Tourism Bureau and produced by PaintScaping, a Los Angeles-based world leader in 3D projection mapping. Also known as video mapping or spatial augmented reality, 3D projection mapping is a technologically advanced method that uses specialized software to transform structures or objects into display surfaces for video projection. By turning these structures into canvases upon which to tell captivating stories, 3D projection mapping blurs the boundaries between the real and virtual worlds. Audio-visual narratives typically accompany the imagery.

Sedona Northern Lights is the largest 3D projection mapping project to ever be performed on a natural canvas in the US. From a tower located 3,000 feet away, 12 projectors will be synchronized to cast a seamless, high-resolution image onto the 160,000 square foot face of Camelhead Rock.

Despite this grandeur, a major advantage of 3D projection mapping is that it does not have any harmful effects on the environment. No footsteps will impact the land and no animals will be harmed as the projection screen is a sheer rock cliff; the event has been approved by the US Forest Service for both the land and the wildlife. In addition, the lights will be perfectly positioned so they are only displayed on Camelhead Rock and will not pollute the dark sky. Sedona Northern Lights has been carefully orchestrated in recognition of Sedona’s special designation as a Dark Sky Community by the International Dark Sky Association, which allows holiday lights. This event would not happen without our awe-inspiring night skies!
