SCC&TB announces the formation of The Greater Sedona Business Improvement District

The Sedona Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Bureau together with nine of its Platinum Partner Hotels, joined forces to create revenue streams used to promote Sedona’s “Select Hotels.” The Platinum Partner Hotels include Enchantment Resort, Arabella Hotel Sedona, Poco Diablo Resort, L’Auberge de Sedona, Orchards Inn, GreenTree Inn, Arroyo Pinion Hotel, Southwest Inn and Whispering Creek B&B. 800 rooms are represented by these hotels. Funds must be spent on programs and activities that benefit the businesses providing the funds to support those efforts.

The Greater Sedona Business Improvement District (BID) is a way of funding tourism promotion and economic development activities year-round to increase overall revenue for the businesses in Sedona and the surrounding areas. This voluntary program was co-created with guidance by Civitas Advisors – a full-service firm that works with over 200 destinations worldwide in creating and implementing innovative funding mechanisms. The priority of the BID is initially focused on directly promoting these participating businesses.

The Sedona Chamber of Commerce & Tourism Bureau, along with the lodging property leaders in Sedona, has created a strong, vibrant funding mechanism to bring additional business to the destination. Their efforts will be a great benefit to not only the hospitality industry but also the community and residents of Sedona,” said John Lambeth, founder and CEO of Civitas.

The founding members of the BID are called “Platinum Partners.” Platinum Partners will receive special promotional visibility during the full duration of their BID commitment. However, all participating hotels and The Chamber believe that the entire business community of Greater Sedona will benefit from the efforts of Platinum Partners. The SCC&TB believes that the best way for it to serve the business community is to promote the business community.

“We’re very pleased to have launched the Greater Sedona Business Improvement District, says Michelle Conway Kostecki, president and CEO of the Sedona Chamber of Commerce & Tourism Bureau. After six months of development with area business leaders, it’s exciting to be now able to share this news, illustrating our resiliency as an organization; our innovativeness as a chamber of commerce; and, most importantly, our commitment to champion and support local businesses. We look forward to more hotels joining the BID.”

The invitation is open for additional hotels to join, which would secure stronger revenue streams and create additional promotional opportunities. The BID program consists of tiers based on when hotels come on board —not business size.

It is anticipated that by spring 2024, enough funds will have accrued in time to develop a “Summer 2024” paid advertising campaign that will supplement the ongoing “Sedona’s Select” promotion. Paid placement will include a mix of traditional and new media for an ambitious campaign, supported by research, created by professionals and approved by the Platinum Partners.

Sedona’s tourism industry is a $1B industry, with visitors generating 77% of the city’s sales and bed tax revenues equating to $31 million in local tax dollars (FY23). Tourism supports over 10,000 jobs in Sedona and creates around $240 million in wages.

“The SCC&TB is a leading chamber of commerce in a very tourism-oriented city. It is our mission and commitment to support commerce,” says Mike Wise, chairman of the SCC&TB Board of Directors. “While the city of Sedona now focuses on marketing Sedona as the Destination Management and Marketing Organization (DMMO), the SCC&TB will focus on promoting local businesses and the BID provides the appropriate funding to help make this happen. This is a solid approach that allows both the chamber and the city to own their paths and to move forward in unison.”

The Sedona Chamber of Commerce is a 501(C)(6) Nonprofit business membership organization founded in 1949. In the fiscal year, 2023 we have 765 total partners, which includes 93 new partners. 48% have been with the chamber for 10 years or more.
